  14. WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause
  15.      serious, system-wide problems that may require you to
  16.      reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot
  17.      guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of
  18.      Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own
  19.      risk.

  21. SYMPTOMS

  24. In Microsoft Windows NT or Advanced Server, the Print To Additional
  25. Ports box in the Printer Details dialog box is for printer spooling.
  26. If you delete a printer port, you cannot retrieve it.

  28. RESOLUTION
  29. ==========

  31. To work around this problem, you have to add the deleted port back
  32. through the Registry Database, as shown below.
  33.  
  34. WARNING: The Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE) is a very powerful utility
  35. that allows you to directly change the Registry Database. Using the
  36. Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems, including
  37. hard-disk corruption. You may need to reinstall the software to
  38. correct any problems. Microsoft does not support changes made with the
  39. Registry Editor. Use this tool at your own risk.
  40.  
  41. 1. Start the Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE) and go to the following
  42.    subkey in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine hive:

  44.       Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Ports
  45.  
  46. 2. From the Edit menu, choose Add Value.
  47.  
  48. 3. In the Value Name box, type the printer port that was deleted (for
  49.    example, COM1: or LPT1:). Retain the default value in the Data box
  50.    (REG_SZ), and choose OK.
  51.  
  52. 4. In the String box, type the appropriate settings that correspond to
  53.    the port you typed in the Value Name box, for example:
  54.  
  55.       9600,n,8,1 for COM ports
  56.       No entries for LPT ports
  57.  
  58. 5. Exit the Registry Editor. Log off and log on.

  63. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version
  64. 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information
  65. here as it becomes available.
